Trucking Safety Sign Training
ESL - Mobile First Demo Module
Instructional Problem
A transportation client wanted to explore how digital learning could help non-native English speaking truck drivers understand critical road signs more effectively. Many of their drivers access training on mobile devices while on the road, and existing materials relied heavily on text, creating a barrier for ESL learners.
The challenge: How can we design a concise, mobile-friendly learning experience that reinforces visual recognition and comprehension of essential road signs to prevent accidents?
Solution
I created a 4-slide interactive microlearning demo in Articulate Storyline that blended visual recognition, simple decision making, and gamified motivation.
The experience introduces real world driving scenarios and awards points for correct identification of signs. Learners receive a certificate of completion at the end, reinforcing accomplishment and encouraging replayability.
The design demonstrates how microlearning can make essential safety content both accessible and engaging for diverse learners
Impact
The prototype served as a proof of concept for a larger ESL safety training program. It effectively illustrated how gamified Storyline modules can capture attention, deliver clear visual instruction, and motivate learners.
The client used the demo to secure buy in for expanding their digital learning strategy across a broader driver training initiative
Design Notes
Gamification: Points awarded for correct answers; first-try logic encourages focus.
Feedback: Immediate visual and text feedback reinforces recognition.
Narration: Clear, paced voiceover guides ESL learners through each prompt.
Certificate: Downloadable certificate triggered by completion variable.
Mobile design: Optimized layout and touch targets for phone use.
Structure: Four concise scenarios simulating real driving decisions.
